Why Diet and Exercise Can’t Always Fix Loose Abdominal Skin

For all the great things diet and exercise can do for your health, wellness, and appearance, they’re not always effective at one of the most common complaints we hear, which is loose abdominal skin. In fact, losing weight through diet and exercise can sometimes make abdominal skin even more noticeably loose, especially if it had been stretched out for a prolonged period of time or if you’re lacking good skin elasticity due to age or another factor.

At The Oregon Clinic in Portland, OR, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sean McNally understands how frustrating it can be to put in the work without getting the results you expect and deserve. Our team is proud to help patients achieve their aesthetic goals through a variety of skin-tightening solutions. Depending on the extent of your abdominal skin laxity and other variables, Dr. McNally may recommend body contouring surgery, like abdominoplasty, or nonsurgical skin tightening with Renuvion®. Here, you’ll find helpful information about why it can feel impossible to tighten loose skin in your midsection and how our team can help.

Why do I only have loose skin on my stomach?

The abdominal area is one of the most common places for loose skin to develop because the skin there often goes through significant stretching over time. Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, aging, and genetics can all affect how well the skin is able to “snap back” after being stretched. For some people, loose abdominal skin becomes especially noticeable after major weight loss because the fat volume decreases, but the skin has already lost some of its elasticity. This can leave behind folds, creases, or a softer appearance that exercise alone cannot fully correct.

Why doesn’t loose stomach skin respond to diet and exercise like the rest of my body?

Diet and exercise are excellent for reducing fat and strengthening muscles, but they cannot directly tighten skin that has already been stretched beyond its ability to retract naturally. That’s why many patients feel discouraged when they’re becoming healthier and stronger overall, but still can’t achieve the flat, firm stomach they expected. Several factors can make loose abdominal skin especially resistant to improvement, including:

  • Loss of skin elasticity with age
  • Pregnancy-related stretching
  • Significant weight loss
  • Genetics and skin quality
  • Long-term skin laxity

When loose skin is the primary issue rather than excess fat, it often requires a treatment specifically designed to tighten or remove that skin.

Does RF skin tightening with Renuvion really make a difference?

For the right candidate, yes. Renuvion nonsurgical skin tightening combines radiofrequency energy with helium plasma to tighten tissue beneath the skin and stimulate contraction in a way that can noticeably improve mild to moderate skin laxity. Many patients are drawn to Renuvion because it offers a less invasive alternative to surgery with smaller incisions and a shorter recovery period. Results continue to develop over time as the skin and underlying tissue respond to the treatment.

Is my skin too loose for Renuvion? If so, am I a candidate for a tummy tuck for loose skin?

The answer depends largely on how much excess skin is present and how much structural support is needed. Patients with mild to moderate laxity may be excellent candidates for Renuvion, especially when skin quality is still relatively good overall. However, when there is a significant amount of loose or hanging abdominal skin, stretched abdominal muscles, or excess tissue after pregnancy or major weight loss, a tummy tuck may provide a more dramatic and complete improvement. During your consultation, Dr. McNally will evaluate your anatomy carefully and help determine which option is most likely to achieve the outcome you’re hoping for.
