Liposuction is a great procedure for men and women who are at an ideal weight, but have troublesome areas of fat that have been hard to lose with exercise and diet. Men and women considering liposuction should have good skin laxity because liposuction is not a treatment for loose skin. It is also important to know that liposuction is not a solution for weight loss. Women having liposuction should be past pregnancies as this may compromise the outcome. During your initial consultation, Dr. McNally will set realistic expectations.

Liposuction surgery is typically carried out in an outpatient setting with the help of general anesthesia. To start the procedure, Dr. McNally will make a small incision in your skin before placing the cannula, a thin tube used to loosen and remove fatty tissues. At The Oregon Clinic and Réviance, we're excited to offer power-assisted liposuction with the MicroAire system, which uses a powered cannula to gently vibrate, breaking up fat deposits. This sophisticated treatment allows us to more easily and precisely sculpt the body while preserving the fat to use in any grafting procedure.

Once the fatty deposits have been suctioned out, Dr. McNally will close the incision. Depending on the scale of the treatment, liposuction can generally take 1 – 3 hours. After your procedure, you will be moved to a separate recovery area where our post-op team will assist you in managing any discomfort before you are ready to be discharged.

After liposuction, recovery at home can take several weeks, depending on the number of treatments and the amount of fat removed. Bruising and swelling are common and usually last about 1 – 2 weeks, while sutures are typically removed within 7 – 10 days. Allowing your body ample time to heal is essential for a smooth recovery. Once you're ready to return to work, remember to ease back into your routine gradually. To help rebuild strength and stamina, Dr. McNally recommends light activities like walking and gentle exercises. Although some results may be visible soon after surgery, it generally takes 6 – 10 months for your new body contour to fully develop.

We invite you to contact our plastic surgery office in Portland, OR to schedule your personal consultation.

What about nonsurgical liposuction?

Thanks to modern advancements, there are several nonsurgical options to reduce fat. While these nonsurgical treatments may help reduce mild to moderate fat pockets, liposuction is still best for most patients. Liposuction surgery produces more consistent and dramatic results. Talk to Dr. McNally about nonsurgical options in your consultation. He can explain the benefits and drawbacks of all your options and help you decide which is best for your needs and goals.

What about cellulite and loose skin?

Surgical liposuction only corrects excess fat. For loose skin, Dr. McNally may suggest combining liposuction with a surgical body lift. Lipo is often performed along with skin tightening surgery, such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thighplasty, to give you your best results. To correct cellulite, there are many minimally invasive and nonsurgical treatments. In your consultation, tell Dr. McNally about all your concerns like loose skin and cellulite so a comprehensive treatment plan is created.

Will I have scars?

Since liposuction is an invasive surgery, incisions will need to be made and stitched. This will leave scars, but Dr. McNally does his best to minimize their appearance. This includes making small, thin incisions in the natural folds of your body or in less visible areas. After your surgery, Dr. McNally or a member of his team will teach you how to care for your stitches so they heal properly and fade.
