Am I A Candidate for Liposuction?
Liposuction is a great procedure for men and women who are at an ideal weight, but have troublesome areas of fat that have been hard to lose with exercise and diet. Men and women considering liposuction should have good skin laxity because liposuction is not a treatment for loose skin. It is also important to know that liposuction is not a solution for weight loss. Women having liposuction should be past pregnancies as this may compromise the outcome. During your initial consultation, Dr. McNally will set realistic expectations.
How Is Liposuction Performed?
Liposuction surgery is typically performed in an outpatient setting using general anesthesia for patient comfort. During the procedure, Dr. McNally will create a small incision before inserting a thin cannula designed to loosen and remove unwanted fat deposits. At The Oregon Clinic and Réviance, we utilize advanced techniques such as power-assisted liposuction with the MicroAire system, which uses a vibrating cannula to break up fat more efficiently for enhanced precision and smoother body contouring. We also offer ultrasound-assisted liposuction with Ayon technology, which uses ultrasound energy to help liquefy fat prior to removal, allowing for more targeted treatment and improved sculpting in delicate or fibrous areas. These sophisticated technologies can also help preserve fat viability for patients interested in fat grafting procedures.
Once the targeted fat has been removed, Dr. McNally will carefully close the incisions. Depending on the extent of treatment, liposuction procedures generally take between 1 – 3 hours to complete. After surgery, patients are monitored in a dedicated recovery area where our post-operative team will help manage any discomfort before discharge.

Ultimately, I chose Dr. McNally for his bedside manner, credentials, professionalism, confidence and skill. What Can I Expect after Liposuction?
After liposuction, recovery at home can take several weeks, depending on the number of treatments and the amount of fat removed. Bruising and swelling are common and usually last about 1 – 2 weeks, while sutures are typically removed within 7 – 10 days. Allowing your body ample time to heal is essential for a smooth recovery. Once you're ready to return to work, remember to ease back into your routine gradually. To help rebuild strength and stamina, Dr. McNally recommends light activities like walking and gentle exercises. Although some results may be visible soon after surgery, it generally takes 6 – 10 months for your new body contour to fully develop.

Liposuction FAQs
What about nonsurgical liposuction?
Thanks to modern advancements, there are several nonsurgical options to reduce fat. While these nonsurgical treatments may help reduce mild to moderate fat pockets, liposuction is still best for most patients. Liposuction surgery produces more consistent and dramatic results. Talk to Dr. McNally about nonsurgical options in your consultation. He can explain the benefits and drawbacks of all your options and help you decide which is best for your needs and goals.
How long after giving birth can I get liposuction?
It is generally recommended to wait about 6-12 months after giving birth before considering liposuction, allowing your body time to recover and your weight to stabilize. If you are breastfeeding, timing may also be adjusted. Our team can help you determine when it is safe and appropriate to move forward based on your individual situation.
What happens if I gain weight after liposuction?
Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from treated areas, but remaining fat cells can still expand with weight gain. This may affect your overall contour, including the treated areas. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve your results, and our team can offer guidance on how to support long-term outcomes.
How long will I be swollen after liposuction?
Swelling is expected after liposuction and typically improves gradually over several weeks. Some mild swelling may last longer - up to several months - as your body continues to heal and adjust. Our team will provide clear aftercare instructions and monitor your progress to help ensure a smooth recovery.
What about cellulite and loose skin?
Surgical liposuction only corrects excess fat. For loose skin, Dr. McNally may suggest combining liposuction with a surgical body lift. Lipo is often performed along with skin tightening surgery, such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thighplasty, to give you your best results. To correct cellulite, there are many minimally invasive and nonsurgical treatments. In your consultation, tell Dr. McNally about all your concerns like loose skin and cellulite so a comprehensive treatment plan is created.
Will I have scars?
Since liposuction is an invasive surgery, incisions will need to be made and stitched. This will leave scars, but Dr. McNally does his best to minimize their appearance. This includes making small, thin incisions in the natural folds of your body or in less visible areas. After your surgery, Dr. McNally or a member of his team will teach you how to care for your stitches so they heal properly and fade.
